Insider: Sony will not release a new part of Twisted Metal

The reason is layoffs of studio staff.

Bloomberg columnist and authoritative gaming tipster Jason Schreier said that Sony has canceled the new part of the racing action film Twisted Metal. The development was carried out by the Firesprite team, and the project itself would be a service game.

The main reason for the cancellation was massive layoffs in the studio. This was also influenced by the poor state of the game services industry. Previously, Sony had already refused to create such games based on its hit projects in the Marvel’s Spider-Man and The Last of Us series.

Before this, there were also rumors that the new Twisted Metal was supposed to be a reboot of the series and developed on the Unreal Engine 5. The release was supposed to take place on the PlayStation VR 2 virtual reality helmet.

Yesterday, February 27, Sony announced the layoff of 8% of its employees, which is 900 people. The cuts will affect Firesprite, Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Guerilla and other teams. Sony will also completely close PlayStation London and cancel a number of previously unannounced projects.
