The servers for Warner Bros.’ multiplayer fighting game MultiVersus shut down on May 30, putting an end to the ambitious project that was supposed to compete with Super Smash Bros. Despite a stellar roster of fighters that included Batman, Bugs Bunny, and Game of Thrones’ Arya Stark, the title failed to retain its audience and showed weak financial results.

The project, developed by Player First Games (which Warner Bros. bought specifically to support the project), officially existed for a little over a year – from the moment of its full release on May 28, 2024, although the first tests began in 2022. Now players have access to only local battles and fights with bots.

Warner Bros. has finally closed the crossover fighting game MultiVersus

This decision was part of a large-scale restructuring of Warner Bros. Games, which shut down Player First Games itself earlier in February after several key titles failed to deliver, including Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions. The story of MultiVersus follows the fate of many other attempts to create an alternative to Super Smash Bros., proving that Nintendo’s success in the genre remains unrivaled.
