Twisted Metal Director to Direct New Street Fighter Movie

Director Kitao Sakurai, known for his work on the Twisted Metal series, has joined the creation of a new film adaptation of the cult fighting game series. He replaced brothers Danny and Michael Philippou (Talk to Me), who left the project due to their busy schedules filming the horror film Bring Her Back.

The film’s premiere is scheduled for March 20, 2026.

This is already the third attempt to transfer the Street Fighter franchise to the big screen. Previously, two films were released: Street Fighter (1994) and Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li (2009). Both received extremely negative reviews from critics and viewers. On Rotten Tomatoes, the first film scored only 11% from critics and 20% from audiences, and the second – 3% and 18%, respectively.
