Samsung is developing a smartwatch with a flexible display instead of a strap

Samsung has filed a patent application for an unusual smartwatch design in which the display completely covers the user’s wrist. This approach could eliminate several limitations inherent in traditional smartwatches. Apple first proposed this idea back in 2013, but at that time the technology did not allow it to be implemented in practice. Now Samsung has the necessary developments to create such a device.

A flexible screen that wraps around the hand solves several problems at once. Firstly, the user no longer needs to turn the wrist to see information on the display. Secondly, the increased screen area due to the curved shape allows more content to be displayed. In addition, the display can be divided into several adaptive sections, each of which will perform its own function.

According to the patent, different parts of the screen can be used for different purposes. For example, the outer side of the display can show public information, such as an electronic ticket, while the inner part displays personal content, such as the video being watched. However, it remains unknown whether Samsung plans to mass-produce such a device or whether this is just a conceptual development.
