Michael Bay to Direct Film Adaptation of Cult Racing Arcade OutRun
- AYG -Universal Pictures has begun work on a film based on SEGA’s legendary racing game OutRun. According to Deadline, the project will be directed by blockbuster master Michael Bay, known for his work on the films Transformers, Armageddon, and Bad Boys. Rising Hollywood actress Sydney Sweeney will serve as producer, and Jason Rothwell will be responsible for the script.
On SEGA’s part, the project is being overseen by the company’s president Shuji Utsumi, and Toru Nakahara, who has extensive experience working with game adaptations, is producing. This collaboration guarantees a respectful attitude to the source material.

Released in 1986, OutRun became a real phenomenon in the gaming industry. Initially appearing in arcade machines, the game then conquered many platforms – from the SEGA Master System and Genesis to home computers Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum. Not only did it set new standards for the racing genre, but it also spawned a whole new musical genre — energetic synthwave, dubbed the “OutRun soundtrack”.

Given the style of the original game with its signature palm trees, Ferrari sports cars, and sunset landscapes, as well as Michael Bay’s explosive style, the film adaptation promises to be a visual feast for fans of both retro games and quality action cinema. Filming and release dates have not yet been announced, but the project is already generating huge interest in the gaming and film communities.
