Leaked Crysis 3 source files were found to be protected by a simple password – the leak was revealed four years later

Leaks of this kind are rare, and each of them attracts the attention of the gaming industry. Usually, hackers sell such data for large sums or make it publicly available. However, the story with the Crysis 3 source code seems to have become an exception.

Back in 2020, the hacker group Egregor gained access to the source code and development files of the shooter from Crytek. But instead of selling or immediately disclosing them, the attackers archived the files and protected them with a password, posting them online. And now, four years later, it has become known that the password was absurdly simple: “123123”.

The community was puzzled by this discovery. Perhaps the leak did not generate enough interest for someone to try to open the archive by brute force, or those who learned the password earlier preferred to keep it a secret.

Now the source code of Crysis 3 has become available to everyone. However, direct use of these materials – for example, for modifications or new projects – may result in legal problems due to the protection of Crytek’s intellectual property. Nevertheless, the archive may be of interest to developers and enthusiasts who want to study the technical features of the cult shooter, first released in 2013.
