Concord Failure Closes Road to Sniper Elite Battle Royale: Insider Details
- AYG -The release of the shooter Concord this year was one of the most notable failures of the gaming industry. However, its consequences were much wider than just a financial blow for Sony – projects of other companies were put under the knife.
According to insider Tom Henderson (Insider Gaming), the studio Rebellion Developments canceled Project Archipelago – a “battle royale” based on the popular franchise Sniper Elite. The game, which was first announced in August of this year, had already managed to pass alpha tests of the combat system, but its development was stopped after Tencent refused to finance it.
According to Henderson, the Chinese giant decided to curtail support for the project due to the disastrous results of Concord, which could have cast doubt on the success of multiplayer shooters in the market. Rebellion management allegedly mentioned this in a conversation with employees, explaining the cancellation of the project.
Now, the development team that worked on Project Archipelago will be redistributed to other projects at the studio, including the new title in the franchise, Sniper Elite: Resistance.
Project Archipelago was one of the few attempts to introduce battle royale mechanics into the Sniper Elite universe, making its cancellation especially noticeable to fans of the series.
