Evil Hat Productions has announced that it has cancelled the tabletop role-playing game Tomb Raider: Shadows of Truth due to creative differences with the franchise’s owner, Crystal Dynamics. While the exact reasons for the cancellation have not been disclosed, it is known that the project offered an unconventional take on the Tomb Raider universe – instead of the traditional image of a treasure hunter, Lara Croft was planned to be presented as the inspirer of the “Seekers of Truth” movement, criticizing colonialism and advocating for the preservation of cultural heritage.

The developers expressed regret over the cancellation, noting that they had invested significant effort into creating a dynamic game with an emphasis on exploration and adventure. Evil Hat Productions does not intend to completely abandon the developments – the studio will adapt the concept to an original setting unrelated to Tomb Raider.

Announced in February 2024, *Shadows of Truth* was supposed to be designed for 3-6 players. Meanwhile, other projects are ongoing in the Tomb Raider universe: Crystal Dynamics is developing a new game in the series, and Hollywood is preparing a TV series starring Sophie Turner as Lara Croft. The cancellation of the board game highlights the difficulties of adapting iconic franchises to new formats, especially when it comes to bold interpretations of the canon.
